Description :
As successor
to one of the most sensitive, selective and sonically accurate FM tuners, the
Magnum Dynalab FT-101A continues the tradition by further defining state-of-the-art
in analog FM tuner design. The front panel is devoid of needless push buttons,
lights, knobs and fluorescent displays. At the left of the panel are five small
toggle switches to handle mono/stereo selection, wide and narrow i.f. modes,
a.f.c., and muting. A center-tune meter is fittingly positioned center on the
panel, flanked by a multipath meter at the left and a signal-strength meter
at the right. The four-digit frequency display located below the center-tune
meter is derived from the continuously variable local-oscillator frequency.
A three-stage r.f. MOS-FET front-end is employed, and separate i.f. configurations
are used for the narrow and wide w.f. modes. A rotary tuning knob is coupled
to a flywheel for smooth tuning feel, albeit without the old traveling dial
pointer.
The antenna is constructed
of a flexible metal band similar to the metal strip used in tape measures, it
can be pulled up on the center of the metal band and thereby reducing the lengths
of its two dipole rods. The business ends of the metal band remain rigid and
extended, and they can be rotated for best reception. The MOSFET front end provides
3 stages of very careful and precise amplification. Signals are strengthened
and defined by using highly effective "group delay" filtering to have
a sonically correct audio signal that contains all the inherent richness and
brilliance of the source being broadcast. It offers even greater selectivity
in order to deal with urban signal congestion. Another feature is a user-selectable
stereo blend control that allows on/off selection of the Magnum Dynalab FT-101A's
unique variable blend which is keyed to signal strength to maintain a quiet,
stereo output under low signal conditions.
The sound has outstanding
resemblance to real music, it is smooth yet detailed with minimal background
noise. The soundstage extends to a wide range and has great instrumental imaging.
It sounds transparent and clear with good stereo separation and the analog sound
quality is dynamic and realistic. It pulls in 2 to 3 times as many stations
than other tuners as well as having better sound quality from distant stations
than other tuners. It has tight and powerful bass and great treble extension
without sounding muddy or bright. It has some warmth on the highs and mids,
and plays without any harshness to the ears. The Magnum Dynalab FT-101A is brilliantly
constructed and is only surpassed by its capabilities and sound quality.
