The Naim Audio Nait 5 amplifier follows the Naim tradition of making music, particularly the pace, rhythm and timing as its focus. Since the development of their flagship NAP500 amplifier, the emphasis is now on a clean, informative, dynamic sound with low listener fatigue. That's the new Naim sound in the Black series. Another change for the Nait 5 is that Naim now offers an external phono preamplifier called the Stageline, which can be powered through the internal power supply of the Nait 5, or through one of Naim's external power supplies such as the FlatCap 2. Naim still offers its plug-in phono boards for its more expensive preamplifiers, but that option no longer exists for the Nait 5. With the addition of an external power supply the Nait 5 can also be converted into a pre-amplifier or power amplifier. While Naim rate this amplifier conservatively at only 30 watts , there is more than enough grunt to drive moderately efficient speakers in an average room. Naim amplifiers tend to have very high current though the output wattage is low. The Naim Nait 5 is a dynamic, powerful-sounding amplifier when played at normal listening levels. It has no trouble producing a deep, controlled, and highly musical bass line. This sense of power and control extends from the deep bass through the highest of treble frequencies. With the Nait 5, musical lines never gets jumbled. The beginnings and endings of notes are reproduced with the proper attack or decay, whether the sharp transient of a snare drum or a long sustained piano note. Furthermore, no matter how complex a musical passage becomes, it is easy to follow any single part. The Nait 5 handles imaging and soundstage recreation exceptionally well. There is a very well-defined and large soundstage, with individual instruments placed precisely within that stage both side-to-side and front-to-back. If the recording allowed, the sense of space around instruments is also very clear. Those who prefer tube amplifiers may be put off by the Nait 5' somewhat sterile sound. The Naim Nait 5 may be a little more harmonically rich than earlier Naim amps, but it is undeniably a solid state amplifier.
