Considering as the top model in Arcam's Alpha series, the Arcam Alpha 10 integrated amplifier forms a pair of matched 100 watts per channel with the Alpha 10P power amplifier. Both share a common design philosophy, as well as certain major components. Built to their highest standards using only the best audiophile quality materials, these are amplifiers designed to last and to give the user all the functionality the user ever need. The Arcam Alpha 10 is not an overtly forward or insistent piece of audio equipment, but its sound definitely won't be mistaken for tubes. It doesn’t present a lush or languid picture on the sound, but neither is its sense of precision absolute. Couple this with an inherently flat tonal nature, means the Alpha 10 amplifier doesn’t sound in any way colored. When played, the vocals are rounded and engaging. They sound lively and present through the Alpha 10. Through the midrange and into the midbass, the Alpha 10 is very fine. Its sound is clean and resolving, if missing some of the palpability that good tube gear can give. Down low, the Alpha 10 does not disappoint. Its bass is tight and powerful. The Arcam Alpha 10 reproduces some thumping bass tones forcefully, even at very loud levels. In fact, the Alpha 10 has an almost limitless sense of power. As the sound volumes are turned up, the ears and nerve of the listener tends to give out long before the Alpha 10 does. The soundstage the Alpha 10 throws is decently good. However, there is a notable blackness to the Alpha 10’s background, making individual sounds stand out more prominently. If you need an integrated amp that’s flexible and powerful, give the Arcam Alpha 10 a go. Its sound is unaggressive but not veiled, powerful and driving, and lacking in aberrations.
