Description :
The Marantz PM7003 stereo current feedback integrated amplifier is the perfect
solution for the audiophile seeking uncompromising musicality combined with
flexible operation. One of its outstanding technical features is the use of
completely symmetrical circuitry, which can only help its ability to stereo
image, however the Marantz PM7003 also benefits from containing Marantz's Hyper
Dynamic Amplifier Modules (HDAMs) which use current feedback rather than voltage
feedback. These enable greater dynamics, particularly when the amplifier is
driving speakers whose impedance drops below their nominal value. With six audio
inputs including Phono (MM) and two pairs of speaker terminals, it is the perfect
centrepiece for the stereo system.
The 'Direct
In' set of terminals on the rear panel goes directly into the power amplifier
section to bypass the tone and balance controls. As befits an audiophile amplifier,
there is also a 'Source Direct' selector, which also does the same function.
The volume control moves smoothly, but the friction betrays the fact that it
is motorized, enabling it to be controlled by the remote. The remote provides
output muting, a great feature in that it automatically disengages if either
the volume up or volume down button is touched. However it does not disengage
if the user moves the front panel's volume control. It remains engaged if one
input source is switched to another. Marantz has fitted a 6.35mm headphone socket
as well. Around the back of the Marantz PM7003, the CD inputs are the only ones
that do not having gold-plating. The speaker terminals are quite small and cramped,
so it is difficult to fit thin wires into the speaker posts. Other rear-panel
features include a pair of preamplifier output terminals, a grounding post for
the phono input terminals and a pair of remote control terminals to link the
Marantz PM7003 with other components to integrate the remote control functions.
The Marantz PM7003 ensures that there will always be more than sufficient power
on tap to make sure that transients are delivered fast and clean, and that when
there is a lot of deep bass action which might starve the power supply of a
lower-powered amplifier, the amplifier sails on smoothly, taking it all in its
stride. Recovery is fast too. There is no unwanted overhand after a transient
- the circuit stabilizes instantly, and the control over even the largest, heaviest
bass drivers is impressive. Perhaps even more impressive in this digital age,
when recordings are being made with almost perfectly silent backgrounds, is
that the Marantz PM7003's own circuit noise is so spectacularly low that even
the quietest sound are reproduced exactly, and against a completely silent background,
without even a hint of distortion.
But the advantage of the Marantz PM7003's ability in this area is not so much
the lack of noise per se, but the fact that this lack of noise means that these
background noises will be heard perfectly. It is not entirely desirable, but
it is captured as part of the musical event, so it is only right that the listener
hear it as if it was live. The Marantz PM7003 breathes life and energy into
overly compressed tracks and presents clarity of the amplifier's reproduction,
allowing the listener to hear the engineering at work. Background vocals are
perfectly captured in its own acoustic space and distinct from the rest of the
mix. Drums are tightly focused and pianos are frighteningly realistic. All these
qualities have made the Marantz PM7003 deserving of the highly acclaimed praises
from magazines.
