Description :
The Sonus Faber Electa Amator speakers' appearance have received at least as
much attention as its performance. Each of its eight corners are rounded off
in a beautifully worked curve. 24 separate pieces of gorgeous solid walnut are
cut and grooved to make the sides of the cabinet. The result is stunning. The
woodwork is reminded of a great deal of the inlaid artwork found around Sorrento,
in the Amator's native Italy. Inside each cabinet are two Dynaudio drivers built
exclusively for Sonus Faber. The tweeter, a 1" soft dome said to be capable
of handling 600W of continuous power, is the same Dynaudio Esotar 330 tweeter
which is also used in the marvelous Sonus Faber Extrema speakers. Each tweeter
is protected by a metal-wire tripod which has no deleterious effect on the sound.
The midrange/woofer, which handles the signal below 2.8kHz, is a 7" long-throw
cone unit. The crossover is said to feature true 6dB/octave slopes. The interior
finish of the Electa Amator is just as fine as that on the exterior, to minimize
disruptive laminar air flow. Inside the speaker, it features a curved and flanged
passageway from just behind the lower driver to the top rear of the cabinet.
The back plate is finished off with two sets of binding posts to facilitate
bi-wiring or bi-amping.
One thing great
about these Italian Sonus Faber speakers are their ability to portray music
with a sensual airy ambience. Sonus Faber speakers may not have the best treble,
may not have the best midrange, may not have the best bass and may not even
be the most detailed. But it is its ability to create music with heart and soul
that sets itself apart. In general, American speakers perform with focus of
rhythm, punch and dynamics. British speakers usually have a more pronounced
fuller midrange which makes them especially good in vocals and jazz. For Italian
speakers, they focus on the highs which brings out the heart and soul of string
instruments. Most Sonus Faber users spend alot of their time listening to instrumental
and orchestral music. Violin and string instruments sound exceptionally pleasing
on Sonus Faber speakers. In fact, some of the Sonus Faber products are named
after some of the greatest violinmakers of the past - Guarnieri, Amati and Stradivari.
The Sonus Faber Electa Amator has a great sense of body and solidity towards
the lower registers a greater sense of naturalness to the high frequencies.
The treble is sweet and crisp and the bass is deep and tuneful. The midrange
and highs are detailed and clear without being harsh. The Amators have a strong
sense of grip and dynamics and a real sense of drive that adds suspense to soundtracks.
They reveal fine detail and present in a very natural way. The tonal body and
total lack of hardness to the tone coupled with excellent dynamics is very much
appreciated. The Sonus Faber Electa Amator has the capability to swing with
the music, and respond to the power of the music. It delivers a huge soundstage
which completely belies its size. Timbres are harmonically natural and temporally
correct. Transients are quick, never smeared or slurred, and fundamentals and
overtones are in the right proportions. Once pumped up to a high volume, they
energize the listening room with their remarkable speed. Everything that should
sound crisp has clean, smear-free edges to the notes, and the percussive aspects
of the venerable keyboard are not compromised. Acoustic guitar recordings shows
the same strengths, with the added attraction of rich woody resonances, while
a capella has an almost complete removal of the chestiness. The Sonus Faber
Electa Amator is a pair of high performance speakers at an affordable price,
enjoyed by its fortunate listeners.
