Description :
The Naim Audio
SBL speakers closest
equivalent in the current Naim range in terms of size would be the Allae, but
it is arguably close to the sound quality of the SL2. Naim Audio ceased making
the SBL in 2002. The early series of the Naim SBL uses an
8" paper cone bass unit derived from the Mordaunt Short DS08 used in the
original Pageant and a Scanspeak tweeter. The mk2 versions have a updated
bass driver. The SBL
is uncommonly well designed, and capable of outstanding music reproduction.
The brilliance of this speaker lies in the design of cabinets and stands. Even
today few speakers can match the completeness of this design which integrates
drivers, cabinets and stands together. The cabinet structure comprises three
separate enclosures, one for the bass/midrange unit and one for the tweeter,
with the third coupled to the bass/midrange enclosure via a precision acoustical
resistance. This arrangement apparently provides a very high level of isolation
for its drivers and gives the extended low frequency performance and low distortion
associated normally with much larger cabinets. The sound is very dynamic and
exceptionally suitable for rock music. Those who enjoy live performance music
will love having the Naim Audio SBL speakers. They can blast real loud without
distortion. Another characteristic of the Naim Audio SBL is that the speakers
can be upgraded by played active. By using the Naim Audio Naxo 2/4 active crossover,
the SBL's can be switched to active mode which brings even more excitement and
enjoyment to the music. Just for some who are curious what SBL stands for, it
means Separate Box Loudspeaker.
