Description :
The Audio Research D130 power amplifier is undistinguished visually, inhabited
by nothing more than a rocker-style power switch, two LEDs to indicate power
status (standby and operate), and the company's signature rack-mount handles.
It is a two-channel amplifier using advanced semiconductor topology from input
to output. There are distributed power supplies on separate output stage circuit
boards to yield a virtual dual-mono layout back to the A.C. power transformer.
This layout minimizes signal-path lengths and allows the use of high-purity,
low-ESR storage capacitors for quicker, cleaner transient response and better
overall musical dynamics. Multiple-emitter transistors (METs) are used in the
output stage; these devices have the electrical ruggedness of a bipolar design,
and the musicality that MOSFET devices are known for. A fast-acting, sonically
transparent protection circuit shuts down the driver stage of the amplifier
whenever a fault condition is sensed at either the input or output of the amplifier.
With ample power to drive most contemporary speaker designs, the Audio Research
D130 is nonetheless compact in size, making it ideal for shelf or cabinet installation
(it also has modest heat dissipation, thanks to generous heat-sinking of the
output boards). Inputs include both balanced and single-ended connectors for
convenient connection to a preamp or A-V processor. The Audio Research D130
provides for both balanced and unbalanced hookup, with shorting pins being provided
to disable the unused inputs. Two pairs of high-quality, hex-head binding posts,
a fuse holder, and a captive AC power cord occupy their respective positions
on the D130's rear panel.
The Audio Research
D130's tube-like demeanor results in a midrange that is liquid-smooth, transmitting
a soothing tone and breathy delivery with great fidelity. The bass is assuring,
presenting in a fairly tight and articulate manner. The sound of piano and percussion
possesses a rich and natural sonority throughout its range. The amplifier infuses
music with a compelling beauty, resulting in many long and pleasurable listening
sessions. It has the natural beauty throughout the middle frequencies, the pleasing
and somewhat soft, tonal balance, and its indefinable, yet abundant, overall
musicality. It can paint a sonic picture full of authentic colors and textures.
Metallic percussive objects, ranging from small cymbals to large gong-like instruments,
are beautifully rendered with its wide range of tonal color intact. The Audio
Research D130 will create a performance so close to realism that most would
not forget for years.
