Description :
The Adcom GFA
5500 is unlike most amplifiers as it uses only MOSFETs in the signal path. It
is designed by Nelson Pass who designed other brands of amplifiers like Threshold
and Passlabs. In the GFA 5500, there are no bipolar transistors anywhere. It
also simplifies the signal path by using only three gain stages as opposed to
5 like many competitors. The amplifier has a very high dampening factor and
is also a high current design. Unlike the similarly output power GFA-555 model,
the GFA 5500 cannot be bridged and it has no XLR inputs. The Adcom GFA 5500
on is said to have fast transient response due to it's improved class A front
end and MOSFET outputs. The MOSFETs draw alot of power and it doesn't matter
if the amp is pushing music or just sitting idle, it still drains the same amount
of juice.The 5500 also gets notably hotter due to the MOSFETs, and ventilation
is thus a bigger concern. The Adcom produces a very deep and wide soundstage.
Detail is excellent without being too bright like some competitors.
