Description :
The Primare A20 mk2 is slightly different from the mk1 version. It's power has been upgraded from 60 to 70 watts per channel. Also, it now comes with a pre-out output which allows an additional power amplifier to be hooked to the hifi system. Another noticeable difference is the amplifier has only 3 round feet instead of the usual 4. The A20 mk2 is quite heavy for its size. It is still a dual-mono design with each stereo channel having its own dedicated power amplifier and remaining independent from input to output. According to the manual, it employs a circuit based on J-FET input and bipolar output devices that Primare believes to provide high performance and excellent reliability. The A20 has quite a dynamic sonic characteristic. Its forward, immediate nature helps to give music a nice sense of liveliness The amplifier’s ability to keep up and reproduce bass lines with control in energetic recordings is commendable. It is quick on its feet and does not seem to trip, even on fast paced music. A double bass instrument, for example, is conveyed with good clarity with each note well separated. Rather than providing the weight and slam, the A20 seems to be better at keeping the low frequencies tight while maintaining the momentum. Nonetheless, the Primare A20 Mk II, with its lively character together with its classy, high build quality and affordability, should attract those who live on a steady diet of music with a strong rhythmic flavour. In addition, the Primare is a worthy consideration for those wanting to inject more life into their hi-fi systems if they find them too laidback or boring, and warrants an audition.
